Five minutes to calm: puzzle games for the end of the day

Not every puzzle game wants to test you. Some just want to keep your hands busy while your mind unwinds, and there's real craft in getting that balance right. Gridlock Garden is my current go-to for this.

The key feature I look for is the absence of pressure. No timers, no energy meters, no daily streak nagging me to come back. A good wind-down puzzle lets me play one board or twenty, then close the app without guilt.

The difficulty still matters, though. Too easy and my mind wanders; too hard and it becomes work. The sweet spot is a puzzle that asks for just enough focus to quiet everything else. Gridlock Garden hits it by letting complexity creep in slowly.

I usually play a few boards with the lights low, no sound. It's become part of a bedtime routine, which I never expected from a phone game. If you struggle to put the day down, a gentle puzzle can be a surprisingly good tool.

The goal isn't to win. It's to get pleasantly lost in a small, solvable problem for a few minutes. The best of these games understand that.
